A few years ago I began to realize my vision was deteriorating– things were getting cloudy and lights had a halo around them. Years of high altitude flying and exposure to the sun had contributed to cataracts on both of my eyes. My father had had his removed, so I was somewhat prepared for what was to come. They did my right eye which was a little worse and then a couple of months later they did my left eye.

I was amazed at how much clearer my vision was. Colors were more vivid, and there was no longer the halo or glow around lights at night. Then recently I began to have trouble again. I always thought once you had cataracts done you were good to go for life. Not so!

It seems there is such a thing as a secondary cataract, a posterior capsule opacity. Occasionally a hazy membrane will form, sort of like a scar tissue that gives you the same vision issues as a cataract. However rather than another lens implant, the treatment is rather simple–  a laser is used to cut a hole in the membrane which allows normal light to pass through to the retina.

Our republic was set up for self-rule; government’s only purpose was to protect our rights. There was an assumption each person could search out his or her own destiny. Progressives have a mission, and they are good advertisers selling their idea. In their eyes, most people are incapable of engaging in self-determination over their lives. They believe that they, alone, can make the decisions that are in the best interests of the people.

Using their advertising (propaganda), they use feelings to sway people into believing that what the “other side” promotes is bad, playing on peoples’ fears. They claim Republicans want you to have dirty air and dirty water; they want old people to die. They only care about the rich, and everyone else is left helpless and dying in the streets.

Feelings are also vital in selling ideas to their supporters. “It’s for the children, free education, healthcare and so on.” Of course, none of them ever ask where the money will come from. They are told by the progressives that if only the rich pay their “fair share,” it would solve all of our problems. What they don’t say is that if you confiscated 100% of the top one percent’s income you might wipe out the deficit and pay off the national debt…in 40 years! And of course, if you took 100% of their income, it would destroy all incentive to produce.

Progressive policies are like cataracts. If you aren’t paying close attention, you soon see that liberty has become obscured and an out of focus object in the distance. Had I not gone to the doctor and if a solution had not been developed to fix my eyes, then I would have been destined to lose my vision.

Our republic is no different. If we do not seek the remedy that is available, we are doomed to lose our vision of liberty.

“The founders inserted this alternative method of obtaining constitutional amendments because they knew the Congress would be unwilling to give attention to many issues the people are concerned with, particularly those involving restrictions on the federal government’s own power. The founders foresaw that and they provided the convention as a remedy. If the only way to get that convention is to take this minimal risk, then it is a reasonable one.” -Antonin Scalia

“[It] could not be known to the framers of the constitution, whether there was too much power given by it or too little; they, therefore, prescribed a mode by which Congress might procure more, if in the operation of the government it was found necessary; and they prescribed for the states a mode of restraining the powers of the government, if upon trial it should be found they had given too much.” -New York lawmaker Samuel Jones

“…two-thirds of the states can always procure a general convention for the purpose of amending the constitution, and that three-fourths of them can introduce those amendments into the constitution, although the President, Senate and Federal House of Representatives, should be unanimously opposed to each and all of them.” -Tench Coxe

“But the Chief Justice says, “there must be an ultimate arbiter somewhere.” True, there must; but does that prove it is either party? The ultimate arbiter is the people of the Union, assembled by their deputies in convention, at the call of Congress, or of two-thirds of the States. Let them decide to which they mean to give an authority claimed by two of their organs. And it has been the peculiar wisdom and felicity of our constitution, to have provided this peaceable appeal, where that of other nations is at once to force.” -Thomas Jefferson to Justice William Johnson regarding a Supreme Court exceeding its enumerated powers

Progressives are like cataracts, they keep coming back. Thankfully the framers gave us options and tools by which we can keep our vision clear. Will we let ignorance or fear prevent us from using the solution?
